Otago Peninsula Hoopers Inlet

Serene and peaceful waters surrounded by birdlife

The Māori name for Hoopers Inlet was Puke-tu-roto, meaning “hills standing around a lake”. The inlet is a serene location and was on a traditional Māori route for collecting shellfish. It’s shallow waters, predominantly sand and mud flats at low tide, is known for the diverse native bird life.

On a clear night, Hoopers Inlet also happens to be one of the best places in New Zealand to watch the Aurora Australis, and just as beautiful to visit during the day.
